With more than 20 seats open on a variety of community and county boards and commissions, the June 2010 election provides a great opportunity for civic-minded Bismarck-Mandan community members to step into important leadership roles. In order to encourage the continuation of the community-focused leadership that led a growing Bismarck-Mandan through the national recession, the Chamber is actively examining ways to encourage and educate those interested in public service.

Event Draws Potential Delegates

More than 50 people attended the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber’s first Candidate Information Forum on Jan. 7, 2009 at the Chamber. Participants learned what to expect if their name topped the polls after an election, including time commitments, constituent relations and more.
Past and current elected officials, including Mandan Park Board Member Terry Kraft, Bismarck City Commissioner Connie Sprynczynatyk and past Commissioner Sandi Tabor, Bismarck School Board Member Dan Kuntz and former Burleigh County Commissioner Claus Lembke, spoke to attendees about their public office experiences.

A consultant, commissioned by a steering committee of oil industry leaders, will determine the fate of future refining. The Corval Group, with offices in St. Paul, Minn., and Beulah, N.D., will analyze whether a business case can be made to increase oil-refining capacity in North Dakota. The $415,000 study, whose tab is being picked up by the U.S. Department of Energy, through the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), is scheduled to be completed by July 2010.
